On an August afternoon in 1994, I remember sitting in a large meeting area in the Anderson Center at Winston-Salem State University. My peers and I were about to embark on student teaching in the public schools of Winston-Salem.

You can imagine how we felt.

We were nervous yet excited to implement what we had learned from the books, but anxious to find out what we would learn from the real-world experience.

There were two things that I remember the dean of the school of education saying to us. She told us to be firm and fair and to dress for the job we wanted to have.

She made it clear that our attire should be professional at all times, representing WSSU well, but also nonverbally expressing that we were ready to sign our own contract, ready to embark on our career.

No dressy shorts.

No jeans.

No extremely casual attire.

At that moment, we were learning a very valuable lesson that all persons who desire to serve others either as an employer or employee must realize:

Your appearance must appeal to your target audience.

When people look at you, what do they see?
When you speak, what do they hear?
When they are in your presence, what do they feel?
These are all important questions to answer as you think about your persona and how it is affecting your personal brand.

Normally, your persona is thought to be a personality that you project in public, but doesn't necessarily align with your inner self. For example, a politician's persona might be one of strength, confidence, and conservatism in the public eye; while, privately, he might be extremely insecure and buck wild. :-)

But, in divine personal branding, it is important that your persona naturally represents who you really are. In other words, what you present and how you are perceived by the marketplace as a whole, should be "dead on" to what you believe in and who you are, even when you are out of the public's eye.

This post today is specifically for the LADIES who read this blog.
I was sitting on Facebook earlier this year and clicked on an ad for the Diva Money Summit. As I scrolled down the list of guest speakers and trainers, one particular diva caught my eye. Her name was Vicki Irvin.
She was the only African-American scheduled to train during the summit. Her expertise was on email marketing of which she called Femail Marketing, which I thought was just "genius."

One night, I was on Twitter, reading the tweets of Valorie Burton, advisor on CNN's Reclaim Your Career Segment and author of 7 books on personal development. Curiously, I combed through her followers and one African American woman with the brightest smile stood out to me. I clicked on her profile and to my delight found that she, too, was an author.

Being the bookworm that I am, I immediately clicked right over to her website, and watched a couple of her videos. The videos were so compelling that I decided to head over to Amazon.com to check out her book, This is For You: 31 Days of Life-Changing Discoveries.
You know me, I am all about transformation, so the title alone was right down my alley. And, after perusing through the table of contents and several of the chapters, I decided that this book WAS for me, so I purchased it.

In the summer of 2010, I immersed myself in a book called Goals: How to Get Everything You Want—Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible by Brian Tracy. At that point, that book was the best investment that I’d ever made because it showed me a totally new way of perceiving things and gave me action steps to follow to get results.

Every single chapter was so delicious. :-)

It was like eating my favorite food as often as I liked ….just delightful. But, even though every chapter shared some life-changing concepts, the chapter that spoke to me the most was Chapter 10: Remove the Roadblocks.

In this chapter, Brian Tracy talks about The Theory of Constraints.

This theory says that between you and anything you want to accomplish there is a constraint, or limiting factor, that determines how fast you get to where you want to go.

In other words, when you are moving towards any goal, there is always going to be a constraint or bottleneck that you must get through as well. So, with every goal, every ambitious endeavor comes a constraint.

If you were to gather together five of your most trusted friends and family members, asking them to share what they believe your best attributes are, what would they say?

Given the opportunity to be totally transparent with you, sharing a “truth moment”, they would probably let you in on some talents or gifts that they see in you, but you have never considered as such.

This information would be extremely helpful for you as you conduct your market research, because just as it is important to know the unique value your competitors bring to the market place, it is even more important that you know how you are distinct.

Are you “sailing blindly through the global marketplace”?

I found that phrase on the about page of the website for SCIP, The Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals.

It really made me think about one of the critical steps that you, the small business entrepreneur may fail to take—researching your competition.

At this point, you should be very aware of who your ideal clients are, what their pressing problems are, what drives their buying habits, and what influences their purchasing decisions.

Now, it is time to see who else in your industry is vying for their business. You must know who your competitors are and what they offer your ideal clients. That is the only way that you can come to the table with something unique, something distinct, but also something that is authentically you.

I'm every woman, it's all in me! Anything you want done, Baby, I do it naturally!

That song will get you going won't it? You listen to a couple of choruses of that, whether it's Whitney's or Chaka Khan's version, and you just might be ready to conquer the world.

Or, you might just be thinking---

I can bring home the bacon. Fry it up in a pan....and never, ever, ever let you forget you're a man, cause I'm a WOman!!!

Ahhhh.....sookie now! I remember watching that commercial as a young girl, not really understanding what was so great about bringing home the bacon. Sounded like an easy thing to do to me. :-)

Little did I know that the bacon represented an income and what this songstress was saying was that women could be professionals, homemakers, and very, shall we say, "feminine", all at the same time.

But at the end of the day, what do WE, the women of the 21st century really think about that? What do we think about the pressures of fitting into certain ideals or molds created by those outside of ourselves?

What do WE really believe WE are capable of and what do WE think about ourselves?

It’s true.

Let me share a few facts with you.

Have you ever gotten your hands on a book that consumed you?

It is one of the best feelings in the world.

Depending upon your interests or your passions, you can get so involved in a book—that special book—that it somehow takes control of your imagination, or makes you think differently, or exposes you to concepts and ideas that you have never known.

A great book may even introduce you to familiar and bizarre characters at the same time and make you experience those characters in a way that affects your emotions, your outlook, and your mood.

Even with all of the technology that we are exposed to, all the ways that we can obtain information, a book is still an extremely powerful way for one person to communicate with many.

Think about it.

An author who writes well and effectively markets his book can reach and teach people all over the world.
