Teaching Female Entrepreneurs to Master Their Emotions
Birthing the Elephant: The Woman’s Go-For-It Guide to Overcoming the Big Challenges of Launching a Business by Karin Abarbanel and Bruce Freeman
I have read several “start-up” books for women entrepreneurs in the past 18 months in preparation for the launch of my personal branding consulting business. Although, all of them have given me sound instruction and much-needed advice, none have spoken to me the way Birthing the Elephant has.
Birthing the Elephant exceeded the expectation of providing great counsel in the area of launching a business, because it touched me on a personal level. Knowing that Karin and Bruce thought enough of women entrepreneurs to reveal both sides of the coin—the logical and the emotional—comforted me tremendously.
I felt supported as a woman in business with a well-rounded roadmap through the sometimes lonely process of entrepreneurship. As if they already knew that I might feel this way, they cleverly included real-life stories of women who had triumphed in the world of business and created phenomenal enterprises against all odds. Having these “testimonials” as examples of fortitude was just invaluable.
As if that were not enough, the icing on the cake is how the book ends by explicitly laying out the pitfalls that female entrepreneurs must avoid. What a relief it was to know that Karin and Bruce had thought of absolutely everything and carefully placed it one resource!
I recommend Birthing the Elephant for any woman who has the courage to be an entrepreneur. It will reveal to you all aspects of the launch of your business—the good, the bad, and the ugly– and provide the holistic instruction that you really, really need.
The Interview with Karin Abarbanel
What a wonderful privilege it was to ask Karin the questions that popped up in my mind as I read her incredible book. Reading a book and interpreting the author’s ideas for yourself is one thing; but , having the opportunity to actually talk to the author one-on-one is a completely different thing all together. Quite frankly, it is a blessing.
If you are a female entrepreneur, I know that you sometimes feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster when it comes to balancing your business mind and your emotional side. If being in business is a new venture for you, you may not be prepared for how much your emotions play into the decisions you make, how you react, and how you interact with others.
Birthing the Elephant must then become a part of your library. Read it and learn from it. But, in the meantime, here is the interview that I had with the sweet spirit known as Karin Abarbanel. I believe it will bless you.
